A company sacks 800 staff

East African Portland Cement Company (EAPCC) has declared redundant all its 800 employees, setting the stage for a leaner workforce with an eye on trimming the company’s bloated wage bill.Acting EAPCC managing director Stephen Nthei Thursday said the sacked employees’ roles will be merged and salaries reduced to keep the struggling cement maker afloat.
“We have a workforce whose total cost, compared to the productivity, is very high. Our target is to operate with less than 600 people earning less than what they are earning now,” said Mr Nthei.
Employees who successfully reapply for their jobs will be expected to take a 40 percent cut on their previous wages. Source Business Daily

90,000 teachers quit teachers union,Knut

Shocking revelations have emerged of some 90,000 teachers who have pulled out of Knut in an ongoing tiff between the union and the teachers’ employer. It is understood that the fear of being locked out of the ongoing promotions and the looming deduction to recover monies paid to Kenya National Union of Teachers members following implementation of Collective Bargaining Agreement two years ago is behind the mass exit. Sources within Knut hinted that the likelihood that TSC may not honour any meetings with the Knut leadership to push for teachers’ benefits has further driven away members. Knut is already feeling the heat on the failed remittance of union dues of about Sh280 million, throwing branches into paralysis. Sossion admitted that the union is suffering. KNUT SECRETARY GENERAL WILSON SOSSION WANTS TSC ABOLISHED

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT)  Secretary General Wilson Sossion now wants the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) to be abolished. According to Mr. Sossion, who blames the commission for the endless stalemate between the government and teachers, an independent body should be created to help in the regulation of teachers’ welfare. Mr. Sossion also revealed that the union had already proposed amendments in the TSC Act that should only leave the commission with the responsibility of employing teachers. “The mandate that we granted TSC is bad, we need to return it back into the Ministry of Education. We cannot have two government bodies manning the same thing; education. We need to have one office and the money they are using should be used to employ teachers,” said Sossion. President Uhuru Kenyatta declares another Holiday in August

The Government has declared August 26 as a  public holiday to allow maximum enumeration of Kenyans during the National Population Census that begins next Saturday. The announcement was made today by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Kenyatta National Convention Centre (KICC) , Nairobi when he launched the countdown to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census. "To ensure maximum enumeration during the first two days ( August 24 and 25)  of the Census period, I have authorized Monday, 26th August 2019 to be a Public Holiday," the President announced.  This brings the number of Holidays declared by the Government this  August to two.
