Sports:Wanyama to become the highest paid player

The Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama is set to leave Tottenham Hotspur before the European transfer window closes next Monday. Wanyama has slipped down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino following the summer additions of Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso. The Kenya international was left out of Tottenham’s matchday squad for their surprise 1-0 defeat by Newcastle United on Sunday. And Club Brugge are ready to pay Spurs £13.5m to secure the signature of the midfielder.  Wanyama will receive £65,000 per week in Belgium, that is approximately Ksh 6,700,000 which would make him the club’s highest earner of all time.

Centum CEO James Mworia at a past event, photo courtesy  Centum Company has cut its  chief executive James Mworia’s salary by 75 percent on grounds of inability to meet  the investment company’s  targets. His salary dropped from Sh177.6 million in 2018 to to Sh45 million in 2019. The company’s financial report for the year ending March 2019 reveals. This is because the company did not make enough to pay a bonus. “Our bonus remuneration is linked to the cash return of the business with a hurdle rate of 15 percent. We did not achieve that in the period and we were therefore not eligible for a bonus,” Mworia told Business Daily. This is the second year in a row that Mworia’s salary is dropping. In 2018, his salary dropped to Sh177.6 million from Sh219.2 million. Mr. Mworia thus fails to be among the top five highest paid CEO’s in Kenya. Last year, Cooperative Bank CEO Gideon Muriuki was the highest paid with an income of  Sh376 million. KCB CEO Joshua Oigara took home  Sh273

Panic has hit the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) over the declining number of continuing students in middle level colleges taking up subsequent allocations. It emerged yesterday that only half of the 43,000 who applied for loans last year have applied for a second allocation, raising questions on the whereabouts of the others. Questions are also being raised whether the students are dropping out of colleges after completing only one year of study, raising concerns over prudent utilization of public resources. The concern is further registered among first time applicants, with only 46,000 requests received by Helb out of the 98,000 who applied through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).
